๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Copy-Paste Isn't Creation

Anyone can copy Bitcoin's code. No one can copy what it's earned.

The photocopy problem

If you photocopy a $100 bill, do you have $100? Of course not โ€” you have paper.

Bitcoin's code is open-source: free to view, copy, and relaunch. Thousands of projects have. So why hasn't a copy ever become Bitcoin?

Copying the code is like photocopying a house's blueprint. You get the floor plan โ€” not the neighborhood, the reputation, or the decades of people trusting that address.

Scarcity of trust, not code

What makes Bitcoin valuable isn't the software โ€” it's everything built around it that can't be copy-pasted: the global network securing it, the people who've staked real capital on it, and a track record of working, uninterrupted, since 2009.

Anyone can launch a new ledger claiming to track 21 million coins. But a ledger only matters if enough independent people agree to run it, verify it, and refuse to cheat. That agreement is the hard part โ€” not the code.

Quick check: Why doesn't copying Bitcoin's open-source code recreate its value?

  1. The code is illegal to copy
  2. Value comes from accumulated trust and network participation, not the code itself โœ“
  3. Copying code is technically impossible

Bitcoin's code is freely available. What can't be duplicated is the years of trust and participation built around it.

Stoic corner

Epictetus taught the discipline of separating what's up to us from what isn't.

A new project can control its code quality and its marketing. It cannot control the one thing that actually matters for money: whether millions of strangers, over many years, choose to trust it with their savings.

That trust is earned slowly. It can't be rushed by a launch date.

Quick check: What does Epictetus's idea of focusing on "what's up to us" relate to here?

  1. A new project can control its code, but not whether the world chooses to trust it โœ“
  2. A new project can guarantee its price will rise
  3. A new project can control what competitors do

Trust from millions of strangers over time isn't something any team can directly control or manufacture โ€” no matter how good the code is.
