๐ The Money Printer Problem
Inflation isn't just prices rising. Here's the real mechanic.
Start the interactive lesson โ
It's not really about prices
"Inflation" isn't just prices going up.
It's something happening to the money itself โ and once you see the mechanic, you can't unsee it.
The pizza
Picture a pizza cut into 8 slices. That's the entire money supply. You hold one slice.
Now someone bakes a brand-new pizza, cuts 8 more slices, and mixes them into the same box.
Your slice is still one slice. But now there are 16 total.
Your share of everything just got cut in half.
The reframe
That's what happens when new money is created.
Nobody took your dollars out of your wallet. Your balance didn't change. Nothing looks stolen.
But every dollar you hold now represents a smaller slice of the whole economy.
Symptom vs. cause
Rising prices are usually the visible symptom.
The invisible cause is the size of the pizza changing underneath you.
This is why "prices are up because of greedy shops" explanations never quite satisfy. They're describing the symptom.
Try it: The money pizza
Drag the slider and watch your slice shrink. Then switch to the slow version.
The money supply is a pizza cut into eight slices, and you hold one. Bake more slices into the same box and your slice is still one slice โ just a smaller share of everything. See it as one big print, or as a few percent a year compounding quietly. Open the The Money Pizza tool โ
Quick check: If the money supply doubles and nothing else changes, what happens to a dollar you already hold?
- It's worth roughly half as much โ
- It's worth exactly the same โ you still have a dollar
- It doubles in value
Twice as many claims on the same amount of real stuff means each claim buys about half as much. Your number stayed the same; your share halved.
Quick check: True or false: rising prices are the cause of inflation.
- True
- False โ
False. Rising prices are usually the symptom. The cause is the change in the money supply โ the pizza getting more slices.

New money doesn't reach everyone at the same time โ or fairly.
