Nine pages

In the middle of the worst financial collapse in a generation, someone published a 9-page paper that would go on to change money forever.

No company. No funding round. No name attached to a real person.

The backdrop

2008. Banks had taken on massive risk. When it collapsed, governments printed new money to bail them out.

Everyday people lost homes and jobs. The institutions that caused it got rescued.

If you finished Pillar 1, you already know what "printed new money to bail them out" does to everyone holding the old money.

The whitepaper

On October 31, 2008, a pseudonymous author known only as Satoshi Nakamoto published "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System."

A proposal for money that didn't need a bank โ€” or any trusted third party โ€” to work.

The genesis block

On January 3, 2009, the first Bitcoin block was mined.

Embedded inside it was a headline from that day's newspaper:

"Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks."

Part timestamp. Part message.

Four quick questions on how it all started.

A whitepaper published during a financial crisis, a pseudonymous author, and a first block with a newspaper headline buried inside it. Test what you know about how Bitcoin began. Open the Genesis Trivia tool โ†’

Quick check: What economic event directly preceded Bitcoin's creation?

  1. The dot-com crash of 2000
  2. The 2008 financial crisis and bank bailouts โœ“
  3. The 1971 end of the gold standard

The whitepaper landed weeks after the collapse, and the genesis block quoted a bailout headline. The timing was the point.

Quick check: Why do most people think the bailout headline was included in the genesis block?

  1. To prove the block was mined on or after that date, and to state the problem Bitcoin was built to address โœ“
  2. To credit the newspaper that broke the story
  3. It was required by the software

It works as a timestamp โ€” that text couldn't have existed earlier โ€” and as a mission statement. Both at once.
