What Bitcoin actually is
Strip away the jargon and Bitcoin is simple:
Money with a fixed supply that no one can change, running on a network no one can shut off.
There will only ever be 21,000,000 bitcoin. Not approximately. Exactly. The limit is enforced by math and thousands of independent computers — not by a promise.
Quick check: How many bitcoin will ever exist?
- 21 million ✓
- 100 billion, like dollars
- Unlimited, they print more when needed
21 million, and over 19.7 million are already out there. Compare that to dollars: no cap, and trillions added in your lifetime. Scarcity is Bitcoin’s entire point.
Grade it with your scorecard
Remember the six properties?
- Scarce: 21M cap — best score in history ✅
- Durable: digital, can’t rot ✅
- Portable: send billions across the world in minutes ✅
- Divisible: each coin splits into 100,000,000 "sats" ✅
- Fungible: every sat equals every other ✅
- Verifiable: anyone can check the ledger ✅
Gold’s scarcity + digital portability. That’s why they call it digital gold.
Quick check: You don’t need a whole bitcoin. What’s the smallest unit called?
- A satoshi ("sat") — 1/100,000,000 of a bitcoin ✓
- A bitcent
- A nugget
Named after Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. "I can’t afford a bitcoin" is like saying "I can’t afford a kilometer" — you buy it in meters. Most people stack sats.
Quick check: Why do savers care about a fixed supply?
- It makes the logo cooler
- No one can dilute their savings by creating more ✓
- Fixed supply means fixed price
It’s the seashell lesson, solved: for the first time, money whose supply *cannot* be inflated by anyone — king, bank, or programmer. Your slice of the pie stays your slice.
