๐ฆ Be Your Own Bank
Self-custody, counterparty risk, and the spectrum in between.
Start the interactive lesson โ
Skipping the step
For your entire life, someone else has held your money for you.
Bitcoin is the first time you can actually skip that step.
Counterparty risk
Whenever someone else holds your money โ a bank, an exchange, an app โ you're depending on three things at once:
- their honesty
- their solvency
- their permission to access it
That dependency has a name: counterparty risk. It's been the price of admission for money your whole life.
What self-custody means
Self-custody means holding your own private keys.
No company stands between you and your funds. No one can freeze it, delay it, or lose it on your behalf.
The flip side is real: nobody can recover it for you either. That's the trade.
The custody spectrum
Custody isn't all-or-nothing.
It runs from least responsibility, most trust required โ leaving funds on an exchange โ to most responsibility, least trust required โ a hardware wallet, or multiple keys split across multiple devices.
Most people move down this spectrum gradually, as the amount they hold grows.
Try it: Rank the risk
Put four custody methods in order โ most trust required to least.
Custody isn't all-or-nothing. Leaving coins on an exchange, a custodial app, a hardware wallet, a multisig setup โ each rung trades a little convenience for a lot less trust. Put them in order and see the trade-off behind every one. Open the Rank the Risk tool โ
Quick check: What is counterparty risk?
- The risk that the price moves against you
- The risk that someone else holding your money fails, restricts, or misuses it โ
- The fee a bank charges to move money
It has nothing to do with price. It's the risk built into trusting an institution with something that's yours.
Quick check: What does self-custody remove from the equation?
- The need to trust a third party to access your own funds โ
- The possibility of ever losing money
- Transaction fees
It removes the middleman, not the responsibility. What you gain is that nobody can say no to you.
