A puzzle: keep blocks ~10 minutes apart

Here’s a problem. What if a million new miners join tomorrow? All that extra power would solve the raffle faster, and blocks would arrive too quickly — throwing off the whole four-year halving schedule.

Bitcoin has to keep new blocks landing about every 10 minutes, no matter how many miners show up. So how does it self-correct?

A thermostat for mining

Every 2,016 blocks (about two weeks), the network checks how fast those blocks actually came, and automatically adjusts the puzzle’s difficulty:

  • Blocks came too fast? → make the puzzle harder.
  • Too slow? → make it easier.

Like a thermostat holding a steady temperature, this difficulty adjustment holds the ~10-minute rhythm however much mining power comes or goes. No one decides it — it’s automatic.

Quick check: A huge wave of new miners joins. What stops blocks from arriving too quickly?

  1. The network raises the difficulty so the puzzle takes longer again ✓
  2. Nothing — blocks just speed up permanently
  3. Miners agree to take breaks

The difficulty adjustment ratchets up, restoring the ~10-minute pace. More miners make the network *more secure*, not faster.

Quick check: Why does the difficulty adjustment matter for the 21-million cap?

  1. It doesn’t — they’re unrelated
  2. By holding the ~10-minute pace, it keeps the halving timeline (and the supply) predictable ✓
  3. It secretly creates extra bitcoin

Steady block timing keeps issuance on schedule, which keeps the whole 21M plan reliable. Two simple rules — halving + difficulty — and the money runs itself.

You get it now

Zoom out. With no CEO and no central bank, Bitcoin manages to:

  • Keep one shared, tamper-proof record (the ledger)
  • Let anyone add to it, but only by doing real work (mining)
  • Create new coins on a fixed, shrinking schedule (the halving)
  • Stay perfectly on time no matter what (difficulty adjustment)

That’s the machine. Not magic — just a handful of clever rules that everyone can check. You now understand how Bitcoin works, not just that it does. 🎉
